Romania with the capital at Bucharest lies today on a territory that in antiquity was called Dacia and was ruled by Dacians.Dacians were a Tracian tribe , an Indo –European people who came in this area in the II Millenium before Christ.

Emperror Burebista (88-44 î.Hr.), the head of one of the largest Tracian tribe,managed to unify theese dispersed tribes in a powerful empire wich had the capital on the territory of today`s Transilvania.During 105-106 after Christ the Roman Empire leaded by Emperror Traian conquered Dacia. Romans governed Dacia until 276 after Christ but lived peaceful with Dacians.Romanian nation was born through Romans and Dacians assimilation.

During Middle Ages , Romania was divided in three independent principalities : Mountania , Moldavia and Transilvania.In 1859, through the unification of Romanian Country ( called Mountania) with Moldavia the first unified state was created called “United Principalities”.This procedure ended in 1918.

At the end of the first World Wide War , all the teritories inhabited by romanian people , including Bucovina ,Basarabia and Transilvania reunited to form the new modern state , Romania. Between 1881 and 1947, Romania was a kingdom ruled by the german Hohenzollern dinasty.The kingdom was abolished on the 30th of december 1947.King Michael was deported and the monarchy destroyed during a coup d`etat organised by communists helped by soviet army .

During 1967 and 1989, communist terror culminated with personal dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu.The totalitarian regime ended through a violent popular uprising on the 22 of December 1989.First democratic polls took place in 1992.At November polls in 1996 the old opposition won , proving that Romania is a country in which changing political power is possible with free polls.
