Revolution From December 1989

Bucarest_PalazzoCeausescu’s regime collapsed after a series of violent events in Timi?oara and Bucharest in 17 of December 1989. Demonstrations in the city of Timi?oara were triggered by the government-sponsored attempt to evict László T?kés, an ethnic Hungarian pastor, accused by the government of inciting ethnic hatred. Members of his ethnic Hungarian congregation surrounded his apartment in a show of support. Romanian students spontaneously joined the demonstration, which soon lost nearly all connection to its initial cause and became a more general anti-government demonstration. Regular military forces, police and Securitate fired on demonstrators. The event was emissive at the voice of America and the students from Timisoara who came back for the Christmas holidays.

A group of Security( Secret Police) plotter generals improved the occation and plunged into a coup d`etat in Bucharest. Coup d`etat planned since 1982, was initialy programmed for the New Year`s Eve but soon was spontaniously reprogrammed to take advantage of the political climate. The leaders of conspiracy, generals Stanculescu and Neagoe were the closest security advisers of Ceausescu and convinced him to organise a mass rally in an arhit square were authomatical weapons manipulated from distance were placed. During the speach of Ceausescu the weapons were unleashed and started to fire randomly in crowds. In this time agitators of Ceausescu started to scream in loudspeakers slogans against Ceausescu. Scared, people initially triet to get away. After they were told on the loudspeakers that repressive Security Organisation of Ceausescu oppened fire on them and a “revolution” is going to take place, people started to join the “revolution”. The rally transformed in a protest demonstration.

On the 22 of December, the army remained without a leader, actually Ceausescu (the official leader of the Army) dissapeared, being sent at the country-side by his conspirator adviser (Stanculescu), and the Defence Minister, Vasile Milea was dead (initially leaders of the “revolution” said that Milea was premeditatedly murdered of Ceausescu but in fact he could be murdered by the conspirators and make it seem a suicide because he might refuse to join them). Being bewildered, military officers decided to avoid conflicts and declared a union with the demonstrants (at least theese were the orders and explanations given to soldiers in the place of Bucharest where the most important events took place) .More details in the appliance: Romanian revolution from 1989.

Violent collitions took place on International Airport Henri Coanda from Bucharest – Otopeni between troops sent one against another under the pretext as they should fight with terrorists. During a debate at romanian television in 1989, a garrison of soldiers affiliated to the Secret Police (whose soldiers in term were doing 18 months in military service) professed the fact that they were be given orders to go and deffend the city from the terrorists of Ceausescu (who were considered in that period an indisciplined grouplet of the Secret Police because they were united to revolutionary tide), while in the city an attac of the Secret Police troups against the garrison was advertising.Hundreds of people chose volunteerly to fight against comming troups. In this special case, the Secret Police garrison leader felt that something was wrong and refused enterring the city. Generals part of the conspiracy (leaded by general Victor Stanculescu) tried to create theese fictious terrorists to inspire fear and remove the army from the plot, ensue from the book written by minion Dumitru Burlan.

The coup d`etat reason looks complicated. The first law abolished (without referendum or legal base) of the new leadership was the article from the organic law wich discouraged liability from the nation. In that moment, all outstanding debts were liquidated, wich made looking for beneficiaries of theese new and wished for due: people, corrupt leaders or international banks very difficult. Also personal interests were served such as the one of the Soviet Union [KGB]. It looks like during the coup d`etat, Secret Police officers shared between them the biggest part of the romanian industry (300 people, characters of the “revolution” and political leaders have now fortunes comparable with the whole internal gross product of the nation. Some of the participants (probably Iliescu) were merely envious on the fame of Ceausescu.

The Death Of Ceausescu
ceausescuDuring that day, Ceausescu and his wife Helen Ceausescu, ran away from the presidential residence with a hellicopter. An adjutant held a gun at the pilot`s head. The pilot landed near a ranch, after upholded that chopper was aimed at by anti-radar aeroplanes. Presidential couple kept running wildly on the field. The route had farcical episodes: a car pursuance, a hiding tryout from the citizens, abandonment from the adjutants, a short stop in a school. Ceausescu couple were held in a police car for a few hours while police officers were listening the news on the radio to see what political grouplet was adjudicating triumph. Finally police yield oneself presidential couple to the army. The two were convicted to death o the 25 of December by a military “mobile chancery” with sort of accusation serries which included genocide, the sentence was executed by an execution platoon from Targoviste. As minion Dumitru Burlan said before he died the couple started to sing The International and the fire was opened after the 4th word. The execution platoon wasn`t ready for the execution. A soldier shoot the lap of Ceausescu before mortal blow. One of the most important accusation against them was illegally holding fortune. To proove this, prosecutors showed at television a pelt bag found in their house and a Volkswagen (while other people had only Dacia cars).

Romania was the only country from the Soviet Block which violently subverted the communist regime. After the colapse of Ceausescu, Ion Iliescu won the presidential ellections in 1990.

Others
Ceausescu couple adopted a son, Valentin Ceausescu (he was addopted to give a personal good example of taking care of the orphans, a major problem in Romania), a daughter Zoia Ceausescu (born in 1950) and a son Nicu Ceausescu (1951).

The official salary of Ceausescu was 18.000 lei ( aproximatively 1.200 dolars at the official rate of exchange from 1989, equivalently to medium salary from USA in that period). From this sum of money, Ceausescu deposited 500 lei at CEC every month for his children. He got presents (for example a gold door handle) from countries and organisation he visited whom illegal character was presented at the process. During his tryouts to take care of his fortune, his son Nicu was less temperate and there were rumours in accordance to an assets he payd in Las Vegas with effective of horses of The Communist Party and many more stories.

Ceausescu`s personal bodyguard consisted only 40 people, responsable for the protection of him, his family and their places. The leader of the bodyguards, minion Dumitru Burlan said that the whole guard was gifted with only two automatic weapons (insufficient for a seriously deffence). Minion Burlan said that Ceausescu believed that his people love him and did not think protection is necessarily. This explaines the lavity of capturing and holding back of Ceausescu.
