Bucharest is the capital of Romania, lies on the bank of the Dambovita River and near South limits of the Carpatian Mountains. It is the biggest financial and cultural centre and the largest city of Romania.

Here were found vestiges of prehistorical settlements dating for approximate 150.000 years. The name “Bucharest” was first mentioned in 1459, on the Wallachian prince Vlad III the Impaler command, who was called “Tepes”. He built the Bucharest fortress especially to defend his teritory form Tuskish people.

During Turkish domination, the city developed very much, becoming the most important financial centre of the Romanian Country. In 1619, Bucharest becomes the capital of Romanian Country.

In 1821 a peasant uprising took place, the first event from Romanian Country, leaded by Tudor Vladimirescu who ended fanariot mastery. In January 1859, at the suggestion of Napoleon III, Alexander John Cuza becomes hospodar (ex Moldavian hospodar) and so begins the unification process of the new state, Romania, with the capital at Bucharest (1861). At the beggining of XX century the city gets a new aspect, being illuminated with electrical bulbs and petrol lamps.

The city was named “Little Paris” because of an important economical and cultural development, and during the Second World Wide War, Bucharest rised up ahitecturally.

Here the legend of Dracula is also borned, an important character of this country, because it represents a piece of the city history. Vlad Dracul was named Protector of The Dragon Order by the Hungarian Emperror. He used to sign Draculea or Draculya (the son of the devil), soon changing in Dracula. He ruled in Romanian Country and later was defeated by Turkish people and forced to establish in Hungary.Dracula was burried in the church of Snagov Monastery, on an island near Bucharest and today his body lies in front of the channel.

The perfect time of the year to visit the city are the months May and June,and spring and autumn are the best periods for Birdwatching in Delta Dunarii. The climate is Temperate Continental with hot summers and cold winters.

The official language is Romanian language with origins in Latin. English, French and German are also frequently spoken.Italian is easily understood.

The official religion is Christian Orthodox but there can be found Moslem, Lutheran minorities. Local currency is leul. (plural lei) divided in 100 bani.
